Climate change and hunting have driven whooping crane populations to near extinction. Work alongside researchers in collecting data, environmental samples and more to determine how the different environmental drivers work to make a difference to the coastal habitats and the availability of a whooping crane’s main food source.

Day 1:

Meet, travel to field site

Day 2-6:

Daily activity includes: Whooping Crane observations: Record observations of Whooping Crane foraging, behavior, territory defense, and movements between territories. Habitat quality assessment: Collect environmental data such as surface water quality and water salinity levels. Vegetation and blue crab surveys: Survey Whooping Crane food resources, including vegetation surveys to assess wolfberry fruit, and blue crab surveys in saltmarsh ponds. In the evenings, you’ll head back to the accommodation for dinner, an informal talk by the researchers, a chance to review Whooping Crane video footage from the day, and of course time to relax.

Day 7:

Research wrap up; departure
