See the mighty orangutans and sail through Borneo

September 4, 2022

To mark International Orangutan Day on August 19, book a sail around the stunning coast of Kalimantan and Indonesian Borneo learning about the plight of orangutans with renowned biological anthropologist and primatologist, Dr. Raffaella Commitante. With less than 70,000 Bornean orangutans left in the wild, the Indonesian Cruise & The Mighty Orangutans of Borneo trip with Wildland Adventures gives travelers an unequaled opportunity to track orangutans in the wild while voyaging through pristine tropical waters among white-sand beaches and pristine coral. The once-in-a-lifetime 12-day trip trip starts at $5,490 USD.

Known for their distinctive red fur, orangutans are the largest arboreal mammal, spending most of their time in trees. Long, powerful arms and grasping hands and feet allow them to move through the branches. These great apes share 96.4% of our genes and are highly intelligent creatures.

Unfortunately, the orangutan is also the most iconic victim of the palm oil industry. Palm oil is a type of vegetable oil which has a very high content of saturated fat. Almost all palm oil is produced in and exported from Indonesia and Malaysia, but most of the time not using sustainable measures.

Unsustainable palm oil is responsible for thousands of kilometers of pristine rainforest that is slashed and burned in order to make way for oil palm plantations. Many orangutans and other animals are killed in the process, for the production of palm oil used in many of our everyday foods and products. This large-scale deforestation is pushing orangutans to extinction.

Accompanied by Dr. Commitante, biological anthropologist and primatologist at Cal State Fullerton, and co-founder of the Orangutan Conservancy and Veterinary Advisory Group, join this unequaled opportunity to track wild orangutans. Discover monkeys, birds and an abundance of wildlife on jungle walks, the underwater world of sea turtles, mantas and tropical fish snorkeling. There are opportunities for stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, beachcombing, and kicking back on the deck of the ironwood pinisi schooner, Katharina, under full sail.

The Indonesian Cruise & The Mighty Orangutans of Borneo trip is offered by Wildland Adventures, an organization devoted to helping our travelers experience the world with the honesty, understanding, and compassion. Wildland Adventures has been leading the way in adventure travel and ecotourism for over three decades.

The 12-day trip starts at $5,590 USD per person based on double occupancy and includes local transportation, meals, water, soft drinks, and pre-departure services.
