Intrepid Travel, SEEtheWILD and Vancouver’s Rio Theatre are proud to screen the Canadian Premiere of Blood Lions. The film will be immediately followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with the film’s director, Bruce Young.

Blood Lions is a documentary feature film which follows Ian Michler, a South African environmental journalist, and safari operator, and Rick Swazey, an American hunter on their journey to the heart of darkness that lies within the predator breeding and canned hunting industries.

It is a story that blows the lid off the claims made by these operators in attempting to justify what they do in the name of conservation.

Blood Lions director Bruce Young will share insights and information about the South African predator breeding and canned hunting industry, and describe the progress of his campaign to slam the door on the industry.

“Canned hunting and predator breeding has absolutely no conservation or ethical value at all. The industry fully deserves to be shut down.” – Bruce Young

Blood Lions is Bruce’s directorial debut. Drawn by the plight of the lions and a deep interest in our relationship with wild animals, this is the perfect project for Bruce to bring his storytelling skills to the fore. Prior to this, Bruce spent 10 years working as an actor in SA and the USA, appearing in Lethal Weapon 2 opposite Mel Gibson before returning to SA to co-found AFDA, SA’s biggest film and drama school.

During this time he also established himself as a local screenwriter and has written scripts for a broad range of film genres and styles including feature films, television dramas, sitcoms and natural history documentaries. He was won a number of awards for his work. Bruce lives in Cape Town with his wife and their two sons.

“Blood Lions lays bare the truth behind the canned hunting industry that, far from contributing to the future survival of the species, may, in fact, accelerate extinction in the wild, leaving behind a trail littered with rotting corpses of its helpless and hopeless victims.” – Will Travers OBE, President Born Free Foundation
