Itinerary

Itinerary

Day 1: Rivers and Lakes of the Outback

This morning, board a short flight to Mildura, on the edge of the Outback. When you arrive, you'll be met by your guide and begin your journey!

You'll first stop at the meeting place of two rivers, the Murray and the Darling. They meet in the Outback, a very significant place to the indigenous peoples of Australia, as well as the non-indigenous.

After lunch, you'll spend exploring the local region, taking walks in search of wildlife and birds beside the rivers and billabongs.

Day 2: Lakes of the Desert - Hattah Kulkyne & Lake Mungo National Parks

Today you will get up early and drive south to Hattah-Kulkyne National Park. The reserve stretches 50,000 hectares and is known for its wonderful combination of wetland and dryland, bird life and other wildlife. You'll also witness the stunning landscape where both red and yellow sand dunes meet the forest. Spend this morning exploring, monitoring birds, snakes and lizards.

After lunch, you'll set off north to Lake Mungo, which sits in the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area.

Lake Mungo is home to a variety of habitats including dense mallee woodlands, cypress pine woodlands, saltbush, and mulga scrub. The enormous white sand dunes tower over the dry lake beds and in some areas are eroded from the burrowing birds building their nests.

Walk to a lookout over the dry lakebed for the sunset and a jaw-dropping view.

Day 3: Magnificent Lake Mungo - Wildlife & Culture on a 50,000 year old journey

Today, be ready for a major highlight! You'll wake before sunrise and head to the shoreline of the dry Lake Mungo. This time of day is wonderful to spot cockatoos, kangaroos, emus and parrots in large numbers.

Later, you'll drive across the dry bed of Lake Mungo and learn about the 50,000 years of Aboriginal History that starts at the lake bed and rises into the eroded dunes.

You'll have a chance to learn about the people that lived in this place, see remains of campsites, cooking pits, etc.

You'll also start the circumnavigation of Lake Mungo. Travelling on foot and by vehicle, you'll discover 4 different ecosystems, from dry lakebeds to sandy bush country. Stop to spot different plants and animals along the way.

Day 4: Return to Civilization

You have the option of taking a bird walk this morning before breakfast and your final transfer to Mildura Airport.
