Take part in a unique opportunity to explore the culture and natural wonders of Cuba with this sea turtle adventure. Wander around the streets of Havana, enjoy traditional music, and even take a dance lesson! This trip includes the chance to meet Dr. Julia Azanza, the head of the Guanahacabibes program.
This adventure will thrill you as you visit turtle nesting sites to monitor and possibly see hatchlings at the Guanahacabibes National Park. Then, later enjoy exciting excursions as you explore caves, help measure turtles, and explore exquisite coral reefs with snorkel or diving excursions.
Profits from this trip helps to save at least 500 hatchlings at a turtle nesting beach per participant!
Arrive on the first day to Havana and we will have an airport pickup arranged depending on when the group arrives. Allow plenty of time to come through customs and pick up your baggage (this can take a long time in Cuba).
The first night, the group will meet at the hotel for an orientation and dine together at one of Havana’s excellent paladars, a restaurant run by local residents in former residences. Overnight at Hotel Presidente, a famous historic hotel.
Enjoy a presentation this morning from a Cuban architect before a walking tour of Old Havana and lunch.
Later, you'll board a bus for a 2-hour transport to Vinales Valley, the renowned region for tobacco growing. The region is surrounded by mogotes, which are large rock formations that make the incredible backdrop to your next stop.
Before dinner, enjoy downtime at an organic farm with a beautiful view of the valley. This evening you will attend a welcome party thrown by a local town committee.
Overnight at Hotel La Ermita (or similar).
After breakfast, join your guide for a beautiful walk around the valley and learn about the unique geography.
Enjoy a lunch at Mural of Prehistory and then board the bus for the 3-hour drive to Guanahacabibes National Park.
This afternoon, you'll arrive at Villa Maria La Gorda Resort where you'll stay for the next 3 nights.
After dinner, the group will receive a presentation from turtle biologist Dr. Julia Azanza during which you'll learn about the turtle research project at the park you'll be visiting.
Head to the beach and look for nesting green sea turtles and hatchlings.
After a delicious buffet breakfast, you'll join a park ranger to look for unique bird life in the park, including the world's smallest bird, the bee hummingbird.
In the afternoon, you'll have the chance to snorkel in one of the reefs.
Tonight, around 9 PM, you'll head to the beach to look for turtles coming ashore and observe the nesting process. If required, you may be asked to assist with data collection.
Today you'll have 2 chances to snorkel at coral reefs, both before and after lunch. Take a boat to one of the deeper reefs and check out the area around the resort's beach.
Tonight, enjoy an opportunity to visit the nesting beach where you'll look for green turtles.
After breakfast, enjoy another chance for an excursion to explore the reefs. You'll then board a bus to Havana, enjoying a stop for lunch along the way.
Take the afternoon to explore museums before dinner on your own (not included).
The next two nights are at the Hotel Presidente.
Enjoy a buffet breakfast then board the bus and head out of town to visit the former home of Ernest Hemmingway. After, you'll visit El Divino, a unique organic farm and community outreach program, where you'll enjoy lunch.
Later this afternoon you will be treated with a rooftop concert by Grupo Mezcla and you'll learn about the different genres of music in Cuba today.
Dinner tonight is at La Casa, a wonderful paladar. Enjoy more music and a night on the town or return to the hotel for the night.
Extend your stay or take the shuttle to the airport for your flight home.
